Period Power Coalition

We are Stronger When We Work Together

Period Power is a statewide coalition of organizations formed to address the issues of menstrual equity and period poverty in North Carolina.

The Period Power Coalition believes that a general lack of understanding about menstrual needs has led to inequity not just in our tax base, but in institutions and public spaces across the state.

To combat this inequity, we are:

  • addressing period poverty and its effects on the education of students in our state’s public schools.

  • vigorously pursuing the elimination of state sales tax on menstrual products, holding that it is a minimum that can be done to address menstrual equity in North Carolina.

  • continuing collaboration with the North Carolina Emergency Management Agency to improve the availability of menstrual products following an emergency

  • working with state, local, and county agencies to ensure menstrual products are available in adequate supply for incarcerated individuals.

1 in 3 menstruating individuals struggled to purchase period products within the past year due to lack of income*.

1 in 4 low-income menstruating individuals report missing work, school, or similar events due to lack of access to period supplies*.

Lack of access to period supplies is linked to using substitute products (toilet tissue or socks), stretching product usage, and missing important events.

Learn more about our state-wide Period Power Coalition and join us in our fight to distribute dignity and advocate for access for all in North Carolina.
